Fruit of Temperance
March 31, 2004

What is temperance? It can be defined as self-restraint or moderation in all things. How many of us are able to self-restrain ourselves when our faith is put to the test?

I have been on a diet since last year and it has encouraged me to be temperant. Yes, not too much of the carbohydrates or too much of sugar. I am learning to eat what is good for me in moderation. Does that make sense to you? I have to admit learning to eat after a few years of non-restraint has taught me a valuable lesson. Yes, as fast as it came on will call for self-restraint because it did not come on overnight and will not come off overnight.

Now if this isn’t the test of temperance than what is?

Jesus was self-restrained in all things. He knew exactly what to say and how to obey the Father. Just because Jesus overthrew the tables in the temple did not mean he lost control. Jesus pointed out the abuse in the temple and he told them why. He said, “My Father’s house will be a house of prayer.”

That is just like my body that has been dedicated to Jesus for servant hood. I finally realized that I was not treating my body well and now God is showing me how to eat in moderation. I must admit it will be a struggle for the rest of my life but God will give me victory if I turn to him each day I am tempted to eat what is not good.

Moderation in all things is worthy of learning in this life. There are a lot of people who say they know God but their house is full of anger, rage, ranting, fits of temper, and jealousy, etc. So how do we overcome such fleshly acts of no restraint?

First: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” I John 1:9
This scripture is specifically for God’s children who have sinned against him since they have been saved.

Second: “Always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.” 2 Corinthians 4:10
Our life should be beat into submission by the pure Word of God. For obedience manifest’s Jesus light in our lives.

Third: “Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.” Psalm 34:14
Think about it, to do good, seek peace, and continually pursue it causes our enemies be held back by God’s power.

Fourth: “The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold; but the Lord trieth the hearts.” Proverbs 17:3
I can’t think of anything any more blessed than for God to take time in my life to transform me and change me daily.

Fifth: “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24
May we always be careful with the words we use and even be careful when we are listening to someone sharing.

Now whether it’s your diet, your actions, your words, or your walk in Christ be careful that you do all things in moderation. Also, a person of temperance is a pleasant morsel to the soul. Jesus was temperant in all things.

Jesus, today I know without you I am nothing. Help me today to take on life with self-restraint and moderation. Keep me in the hollow of thine hand each and every day. Even though Lord I know I am going to be tested, remind me by your Holy Spirit that I represent you and you alone. Thank you Lord for your love and help in my weaknesses. Thank you that you forgive me when I don’t deserve that forgiveness. Thank you Lord that I can run to you when my temperance is being tested. In Jesus Name AMEN...
