The Fruit of Peace
February 18, 2004

What would it be like to have serenity and peace of mind? What would our world be like without any wars but peace among all nations? What would it be like to reason together without fighting verbally?

It is possible to have that peace that surpasses all understanding? How can we get that peace? First: the only peace giver is Jesus. He is the true peace the world needs. He is the peace amid the turmoil. He is peace when sickness has come into a family. He is the peace when the church is breaking to pieces.

An example of peace happened to me this early January in which I flew to my husband’s parents. As we boarded the plane I actually experienced anxiety which I had never felt so strong. I even noticed I was suspicious of people all around me. Finally, as we sat in our seats my anxiety gave way to waves of fear. September 11 will always be etched in my mind no matter where I go. As I sat and buckled the seat belt I started to pray and I asked the Lord to surround the plane and give me peace.

God answered my prayer and I found myself getting excited about our destination. I even could laugh and enjoy the flight. Fear numbs our senses, fear can freeze our thoughts, fear can cause physical turmoil, and fear can cause us to not be useful to our Lord.

Philippians 4:6-7 says: “Be careful for nothing; but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Imagine we can have peace that keeps our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. I will even take it a step further; we can have peace that keeps our minds on Christ Jesus.

“And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.”
James 3:18

Now we see that peace is part of the righteousness Christ Jesus imparts on our lives. The hardest of all to me is to make peace in a hostile world. Peace only can come from our Lord in the heavenlies. We cannot create peace in the flesh. We must surrender ourselves and allow God to empower us with peace.

Lord Jesus you are our peacemaker. You are the one who took our hostilities upon thyself and nailed them to that ugly tree you created. Your peace came down to us through every single drop of blood. In that blood we are able to be healed from hostilities and be filled with thine own peace from above. Oh, Father teach us today and forever thy peace. Use us as instruments of peace not for power but for thy glory. We praise you Jesus our Peacemaker. We praise you because you send your peace if we just give you our lives. Lord, never let us put bruises on your character or stain thy purity with our flesh. Thank you Lord that when we experience anxiety we can cry out and receive thy peace. We praise you Lord and we lift up our hearts to you. In Jesus Name…amen
