Psalm 22
January 18, 2006
As I was reading this Psalm I feel God may be telling me to share with
you, “you’re not a worm.” Our Lord Jesus was not a worm
as he suffered on the cross for all mankind. I can tie so much in this passage
because it describes the suffering of our Lord to the exact moment of his
crucifixion.
“I am but a worm, and no man; a reproach of men, and
despised of the people.” Psalm 22:6
I cannot fathom how much he loved us but how much he endured
so that you and I could be saved. He was God’s Holy One sent to mankind
to turn their sadness and yearning into joy. They laughed at him, scorned
him, beat him, spat upon him, slapped him, and even accused him of being
the devil. Did they not fully comprehend whom they were piercing? “All
that see me laugh me to scorn: they shoot out the lip, they shake the head,
saying, He trusted on the Lord that he would deliver him: let him deliver
him, seeing he delighted in him.” Psalm 22:7, 8
Mary who witnessed all the things Jesus taught and did…pondered
them all in her heart. She now understood the sword piercing her soul. God
knew exactly what he was doing and it must have grieved him to see His beloved
Son on the cross. Yet, God knew his love for mankind overshadowed the suffering
of His Only Son. From the beginning of time God had a plan to save man from
himself. “But thou art he that took me out of
the womb: thou didst make me hope when I was upon my mother’s breasts.
I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother’s
belly.” Psalm
22:9, 10
Going back to the cross we see Jesus hanging by the roman
nails driven through him and his clothes are being gambled for by the roman
soldiers. Oh, if they only knew what they were doing? Our precious savior
hung their before all mankind at that time and asked God to forgive them
for they knew not what they were doing. “For dogs
have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have inclosed me: they pierced
my hands and my feet.” Psalm
22:16
How many times have you suffered on this earth for something
you didn’t
deserve? Did you ask God to forgive that which brought this suffering upon
you? It is not easy to forgive…we tend to want to whine about it and
not move on trusting God to take care of it. Jesus went forward and obeyed
God to his death. I feel so ashamed at times when I whine and complain when
I think of what Jesus went through.
But the beauty of suffering is what it produced for us. “The
meek shall eat and be satisfied: they shall praise the Lord that seek him:
your heart shall live for ever. All the ends of the world shall remember
and turn unto the Lord: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship
before thee…They
shall come, and shall declare his righteousness unto a people that shall
be born, that he hath done this.” Psalm 22:26 , 27, 31.
We are part of those kindred who will worship the King of
Kings. We are the seed that is spoken about in this Psalm.
Since we are in the New Year let’s set time aside
to worship our King in our quiet time and reflect on all he gave.
Lord Jesus thank you for dying for me on the cross. Remind
me when I am suffering that it has far eternal purposes than I realize. Help
me to go back to the cross and place my pain in your nail scarred hands.
Thank you that when you were on the cross you had me personally on your mind
even from my mother’s womb. I praise you for you are the King of Kings,
Lord of Lord, and Almighty God. In Jesus Name. AMEN
